  • “Working with the citizens and the stakeholders” in Giurgiu

    Giurgiu Mayoralty organized on 4.04.2014, an event in one shop for electric household appliances, under the logo: Working with the citizens and the stakeholders. This event was aimed at awareness’ raising with respect to the information the consumers can get in shops, regarding the annual costs with energy consumption of electric appliances and to choose these products in a sustainable way. Under Green Twinning project’s umbrella, this action was the synergy between GT project and other 3 IEE projects: YAECI, Buy Smart+ and EUROTOPTEN MAX. The partner shop was R’ART Giurgiu. Participants at the event: consumers, mayoralty representatives, media, learned how important are the information regarding consumption and costs and how to use EU labels and information for sustainable local development and for their “incomes”.

  • Final Green Twinning Conference

    The Final Conference “Green Twinning: Municipalities together for smart and sustainable energy solutions” was organised on 20 March 2014 in the Committee of the Regions in Brussels.

    The conference presented the main results of the two-year cooperation among 10 partners, regarding the development and implementation of Sustainable Energy Action Plans. It also explored the challenges and perspectives of the EU sustainable policies at local and regional level. For the agenda and all the conference presentations, click here.

  • Technical twinning meeting in Rubi

    On 18th and 19th February 2013, a technical meeting was held in Rubí (Spain) among Kardzhali and the host municipality in the framework of the Green Twinning project. These twinning counterparts carried out a two-days meeting including technical visits to public buildings showing energy efficiency refurbishment best practices and a project to improve the energy efficiency of local industrial sector. Furthermore, representatives of both municipalities formally signed their twinning Memorandum of Agreement.

  • Giurgiu has a SEAP

    Giurgiu municipality was among the first municipalities which joined (in 2008) and signed (in 2009) the Covenant of Mayors in Brussels. Since then the municipality encountered a lot of problems in developing a SEAP.

    03The IEE “Green Twinning” project was the opportunity to get international support in order to have this document and achieve the CoM targets.

    So in the Local Council’s session from 30 January 2014 the SEAP was approved and the process for filling in the document on the electronic portal of CoM is in progress.

    SEAP will help Giurgiu Municipality to achieve the target of reducing CO2 emissions in its territory with 21.05% by 2020.

    Main actions from the SEAP are with respect to improve energy aspects of Giurgiu, meanwhile improving quality of life of the citizens as described bellow:

    1. Increase EE in buildings: schools, kindergartens, cultural center, residential buildings
    2. Rehabilitation for public street lighting
    3. Rehabilitation the indoor lighting in public buildings
    4. Modernization the public transport
    5. Cogeneration for heat and electricity supply
    6. Modernization the distribution network for heat supply
    7. Set at the level of Giurgiu Mayoralty a group for energy coordinated by the Deputy Mayor
    8. Info centre for energy consumers
    9. Policy for municipal waste
    10. Regulations at local level which objectives are to increase EE
    11. Development of energy audits
    12. Green Public Procurement
    13. Communication activities related to EE

  • 3rd national workshop in Athens “Energy Saving in street lighting”

    PEDA organized the 3 rd national workshop with the participation of national stakeholders on January 10, 2014. In total 30 representatives of PoL municipalities and stakeholders (CRES, TEE-TCG, Algosystems, ESCOs, Aigaleo municipality, TEI of Piraeus) attended the workshop.

    The workshop was focused on the experience of Ilioupoli and Ilion municipalities through the twinnings with Spanish municipalities and street lighting. The main subjects discussed between the representatives of Green Twinning municipalities and the stakeholders were:

    1. New technologies in street lighting
    2. Monitoring and control systems in street lighting
    3. ESCO’s and street lighting
    4. Sustainable procurements and contract related to street lighting
    5. Main problems that Greek municipalities face during the implementation of actions related to street lighting.

  • Ilioupoli’s interview on the internet radio broadcast “Sto rythmos tis polis”

    On 2nd December 2013, Maria Boutsoukli, Giannis Belias and Spyros Arvanitakis from Ilioupoli municipality and PEDA, participated in the live internet radio broadcast “Sto rythmo tis polis”. During the second part of the broadcast, Green Twinning project was presented while the representatives of Ilioupoli presented their experience through the twinning between Ilioupoli and Maracena and their participation in the 2nd Green Twinning training course in Krakow.   • Study visit to Armilla municipality

    Mr. Pappous and Mr. Antonopoulos engineers in the Technical services department of Ilion municipality visited Armilla municipality on 21-22 November 2013. They were mainly informed on public lighting technologies, green roofs, passive building measures and energy building control systems.

    In the framework of the Green-Twinning project, Armilla municipality assists Ilion in implementing specific SEAP actions. The SEAP actions of interest for Ilion municipality are: the street lighting and more specifically the incorporation of an energy audit system based on GIS systems, the replacement of existing street lights with led lights (technologies, technical characteristics) and the installation of a green roof on a social care center.

  • Giurgiu’s interview on radio broadcast “Radio Romania Actualitati”

    On 18 November 2013 the Deputy Mayor Liviu POPAZU and project manager Afrodita GRADINARU from Giurgiu Municipality attended the Radio broadcast “Radio Romania Actualitati”. There have been presented the Green Twinning project, the results of the meeting in L’Alcudia and the experience gained through the twinning with l’Alcudia. The interview was transmitted on 21 November 2013.

  • Paiania joined the Covenant of Mayors

    On 27th November 2013, Paiania, one of the Greek PoL municipalities, signed the Covenant of Mayors. After the signing of the Adhesion Form, the mayor of Paiania, Mr. Davaris stated that:

    “The reduction of the energy consumption is an important priority for our municipality, in order to tackle the climate change, upgrade citizens life and sustainable economic and social development. Through this European initiative, our main objective is to improve the quality of life of Paianias’ residents. “

  • Piaseczno has a SEAP!

    LogoOn the 23rd of October 2013 Piaseczno (Poland) formally adopted its Sustainable Energy Action Plan which will help the municipality achieve its ambitious target – reducing CO2 and CH4 emissions from its territory by at least 20% by 2020. The Plan includes many interesting actions which will not only improve energy situation of the municipality, but also bring other positive results like improving quality of life of the citizens, creating new jobs or increasing security in the city. Planned actions include inter alia implementation of a Programme for reduction of low emissions, introduction of energy monitoring systems in public buildings, thermal retrofitting of residential buildings, construction of “green roofs” and “living walls”, construction of bicycle paths and utilization of solar energy to produce heat.

  • Lubin joined the Covenant of Mayors

    LogoOn the 28th of November 2013 Lubin, picturesque rural municipality located in South-Western Poland, signed the Covenant of Mayors joining over 5 000 European municipalities who committed to contribute to the achievement of the EU climate & energy goals by reducing their CO2 emissions by at least 20% by 2020. Joining the Covenant was a natural step for Lubin as the municipality is very aware of the necessity to protect its natural environment and is already involved in many environmentally friendly initiatives. With such a positive attitude Lubin shouldn’t have any problems with achieving Covenant of Mayors targets!

  • Study visit to Maracena municipality

    Maria Bourtsoukli and Ioannis Belias, engineers in the Technical services department of Ilioupoli municipality visited Maracena municipality on 26-28 September 2013. They were informed on public awareness activities as well as energy efficiency measures on public buildings. In the framework of the Green-Twinning project, Maracena municipality assists Ilioupoli in implementing a public awareness campaign related to energy efficiency and renewable energy.

  • Kick-off meeting between Ilion and Armilla

    Vasiliki Zanikou from Ilion municipality and Olivier Cortes and Yolanda Miranda from Armilla participated in the kick – off meeting which was held through a skype conference call on the 16th of October 2013.   • “Local Actions for Sustainable Energy” Event in Athens in June 27, 2013

    PEDA and the Technical Chamber of Greece (partner of SEAP PLUS project) organized the event “Local Actions for Sustainable Energy” on June 27, 2013 during the EU Sustainable Energy week.

    Nantia Papakonstantinou, manager of Green Twinning project presented the activities and achievements of Green-Twinning. The Covenant of Mayors (CoM) initiative, the actions of TCG’s CoM Support Office and the activities and achievements of SEAP-PLUS project were also presented.

    An award ceremony followed, for the winners of the student drawing competitionI paint what we do in our city to clear the sky”, organized by TCG and the SEAP-PLUS participating municipalities.

  • Kick-off of the first twinning agreement (Giurgiu – L’Alcudia)

    The mayor of Giurgiu, Mr Nicolae Barbu and the mayor of l’Alcúdia, Mr Robert Martínez signed the twinning agreement during the kick-off meeting that took place in l’Alcúdia on 25th -26th of April 2013.   • Srem joined the Covenant of Mayors

    On the 25th of April 2013 Śrem, one of the Polish PoL municipalities, formally joined the Covenant of Mayors, committing to reduce its CO2 emissions by at least 20% by 2020. The municipality already started the work on its SEAP and currently is busy with collecting bottom-up data on its energy consumption and CO2 emission necessary for compiling the baseline emission inventory.

  • Presentation of the Green-Twinning project during the workshop organised by Energy for Mayors

    On the 1st of April 2013 Kalypso Siouna from PEDA presented Green Twinning project during the training workshop “Municipalities and Energy: An alternative approach to financial crisis” organized by PEDA and CRES, in the framework of Energy for Mayors project. In total 62 representatives of Greek municipalities attended the workshop including 27 mayors and 8 deputy mayors.

  • Miercurea Ciuc joined the Covenant of Mayors

    Miercurea Ciuc, municipality from Harghita County in Romania joined the Covenant of Mayors on the 22nd of February 2013.   • Participation of the Green-Twinning project in the workshop organised by SEAP-PLUS

    On 23rd of January 2013, PEDA participated in the workshop that the Technical Chamber of Greece (Greek partner of SEAP-PLUS programme) organized in the framework of the SEAP-PLUS. The workshop that took place in Athens was mainly focused on the Covenant of Mayors initiative and the experience of DIBA (Barcelona Provincial Council) as the Covenant coordinator for the Region of Barcelona (311 municipalities).

  • Collaboration agreement between Green-Twinning and Provincial Energy Agency of Granada

    AER, Green-Twinning partner and the Provincial Energy Agency of Granada signed the collaboration agreement on behalf of the Green-Twinning project and sixteen municipalities from the province of Granada on the 6th of November 2012. Most of the Spanish municipalities will conclude twinning agreements with municipalities from Greece, Bulgaria, Romania, Slovenia and Poland and will assist their counterparts in developing successful Sustainable Energy Action Plans and in implementing carbon mitigation actions.

  • Kick-off meeting in Athens on 11th and 12th of April 2012

    The project kick-off meeting took place in the premises of PEDA in Athens on the 11th and 12th of April 2012 in the presence of partners and the EACI project officer.  The coordination team and the Work-package leaders presented the main project objectives and scope of work, while all partners discussed and agreed on the work plan for the next months.

  • National workshops for the initialization of the project

    Five national workshops were organized in Greece, Bulgaria, Romania, Poland and Slovenia so as to inform all participating municipalities on the project’s scope of work and anticipated results.

  • Training needs assessment is underway

    The methodology for the elaboration of the training needs assessment has been successfully completed. All participating learning local authorities are being interviewed and are filling in questionnaires in order to indicate their needs in sustainable energy planning and implementation.
